'On the Right Track’ (In partnership with THE HANDY TRUST)
On the Right Track is a programme designed to support children and their parents through the transition from primary to secondary education.
Schools identify children they feel may find the transition challenging for whatever reason (anxiety issues, family bereavement, behaviour issues etc). The parents are invited to register their child and a meeting is arranged for the parents to meet with the staff team and to ask any questions they may have. Enrolling on the programme is completely voluntary and is free of charge. Once parents are happy for their child to take part, the staff member meets with the child weekly at school. Much of the work is building the child’s confidence and self-esteem by using a variety of resources. The child is given an opportunity to talk over any anxieties they may have about starting secondary school and extra visits to the secondary school take place in the summer term. The programme has been running successfully for over ten years and has enabled many children to transition smoothly.
It has been recognised by CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) that the transition between primary and secondary education can be a particularly stressful time for children and some may experience emotional distress. If emotional distress is not acknowledged and treated effectively it may lead to mental illness. Putting supportive strategies in place can develop children’s resilience and improve their mental health.
